Social Policy and Legislative Positions
Mental Health and Substance Abuse Parity • Parity legislation has passed at the Federal level. This is great news and will have a significant impact in bring mental health and substance abuse coverage put to physical health coverages. BUT, it still has not passed in Michigan. This is needed to address coverage in the state. The Chapter is committed to work with other organizations to have this passed in Michigan. We encourage all members to communicate to their legislators about the importance of this legislation. CMS Medicaid Reductions • Congress passed legislation to halt these reductions for at least one year. It is not anticipated that these will be introduced with the new administration. Health Care Reform • President -Elect Obama has put a high priority on health care reform. His staff has already made contact with the National Society. Charlie Robbins, our National President, held a conference call this week with 35 members across the country to receive recommendations that he can submit to the new administration. David Neal participated in this call. When the recommendations from this call become available, they will be posted on our Web Site. The Chapter is also participating with NASW - Michigan Chapter's Health Policy Committee chaired by Kim Halladay. This paper is now available and can be accessed from the links below. If you have any comment or are interested in contributing to these discussions, please email David Neal at: dneal@umich.edu. Health Care Policy Papers:
